1: Who are you?

Marie-Cécile Aptel, painter.
2: What is your background? 

Autodidact to make short.
3: Where were you born? 

In Paris, France.
4: Explain your work in up to 40 words.

Paintings on canvas or paper, often big size (but not only) because I like it, colored most of the time, abstract but starting with personal and real things, sketches, words, etc… 
5: How has your practice changed over time? 

I started with drawing, classical and figurative drawing. I came step by step to an abstract and colored painting, working almost daily because I take pleasure in it, trying to be more and more free.
6: Do you have a favourite medium to work in?

Acrylic painting.


7: Do you pursue any themes? If so what?

No, not really. I used to work by series a few years ago but not anymore.
8: What other jobs have you done/do you do other than being an artist? 

I had a short experience of teaching, in another life ; I don’t want to speak about that.
9: What research do you do for your art? 

10: What makes you angry? 

– Politics most of the time

– Behavior of human beings very often

– Recycling
11: What is your favourite colour? 

I don’t have a favourite one. It depends on the weather.
12: What is your favourite piece that you have produced? 

The last one if everything is ok.
13: What music/album are you currently listening to? 

I don’t listen to music but radio, very often. We have a good public radio station here in France.
14: What makes you happy?

Being alive, having a drink or a meal with friends, a good exhibition of a good painter, etc… Simple things. 
15: What are your favourite films? 

L’Avventura (Antonioni) ; India song (Duras); La règle du jeu, Le Fleuve (Renoir) ; Les Enfants du Paradis (Carné) ; Mamma Roma (Pasolini) ; Visconti, Rossellini, J.L. Godard, lots of films of John Cassavetes and Wim Wenders, etc… ; Bogart & Bacall, and so many others !!
16: Favourite place? 

For the moment, Paris and Italy (Sicily).
17: One or more artists you like? 

Michel-Ange, Giotto, Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Rauschenberg, Twombly, Rothko, de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Gasiorowski, Eugène Leroy, Diebenkorn, Baselitz, Jan Voss, Richter, Basquiat, Piffaretti, Jonathan Meese…
18: What is your favourite word? 

Alors (So)
19: Professionally what is your goal?

To make good paintings. 

And try to sell them all.


20: What would your dream commission be?

In France, today, painters don’t dream very much.
